Place: Vietnam House, Chinatown

Vietnam House is a small lil’ place on Race Street in Chinatown. The service was top notch, there was only one guy working and he was taking care of business!

The broth was pretty good, it wasn’t the best broth in the world but it had some bite to it. The broth was slightly sweet, there were subtle hints of cinnamon, star anise, and something you don’t quite taste in your everyday broth in Philly…. fish sauce! Traditional Pho can be made with/without it but this is the first place where I could actually taste it within the broth. Kudos to Vietnam House for adding that flavor to it. The broth wasn’t very hot, it was hot and quickly turned warm. The only problem I had was that the broth didn’t leave a lasting taste in your mouth. Everytime I took a sip after the first initial sip, the flavor kind of faded into the background. I like my broth to have that delicious flavor every sip.

The meat quality was alright. The steak was okay… the broth was hot enough to barely cook my steak through. The tendon was excellent. The tripe was…. tripe. The brisket had some fat on it but not as much as Pho Xe Lua. Again, though I got the Pho Dac Biet (House Special Pho with all the meats) it did not come with meatballs (Bo vien). :-(

The vegetables were fresh, you were given plenty of basil. The bean sprouts were a lil brown but not too much they still had a nice snap to them. The jalapenos were good and the limes were incredibly juicy.

The noodles were a little on the overdone side but this place gives you PLENTY of noodles to eat. There is no small or large, there is only large.

The Pho looked very good, it had a nice sheen of oil and looked very nice from the onions, green onions, and cilantro. It was presented very well.

It was very affordable the Dac Biet was about 7.50.

I would recommend this place only if you’d like to try different places to eat Pho. Since this is the only Pho spot that is open until 2am on weekdays and 3am on weekends, I would highly recommend it for anyone that needs their late night fix of Pho.

There was still 8 more places to go for my Pho Fix and that List (will be exploring other places as well!) If you can deal with the traffic and parking of Chinatown, and you need a late night Pho fix, this is a solid place to get quality Pho.
